![]() Describe what changes should be made to the code. This is utterly irrelevant IMO for multiple reasonsĭevs shouldn't be talking in terms of "step-by-step" via the editor UI. ![]() if you're remote work / pair programming, it's much simpler to describe / document what to do if you all have the same interface. The only semi-valid one i can think of is productivity i.e. What problem is this attempting to solve? Why does everyone have to use the same editor? If it were me i'd seriously question the CTO's decision: It's simple really, the goal of business? Minimize cost (without sacrifice to quality), maximize profit. If you switched from WS to VSCode, what were your reasons? that money has to come from somewhere.Īs such, since you want to stay on VScode and are being impositioned, i think it only reasonable you be exempt from any pay cut that will derive from this (make sure you say this in front of the other devs □). That cost adds up, because even with bulk licensing discounts (5-7%), it's not an eternal license i.e. Once you get everything set up, besides a few minor setting changes between patches, that's typically it, compared to ongoing $$$ of WS. VScode's time cost is a once off upfront payment. It's not that Webstorm costs money, and VScode doesn't. This can be considered the primary tradeoff. That being said, webstorm has more functionality configured "out-of-the-box". If configured wrong, VScode can also feel clunky and slow. It's not, it just depends how you configure it, same as VScode. Apparently they don't think WS is too slow or "heavy". TL DR: Some people will probably see through the pettiness of that move and will work somewhere else.Ĥ. If I use a proprietary program on the company's dime, then I am losing my time because the skills I acquire will be taken hostage once I work somewhere else. They won't tank developers' performances by forcing them to use an unfamiliar or unlikeable IDE.Īt the last company I worked for that did that, I really did my best to use WebStorm, but then I said fuck that. If you want to standardize, then use external FLOSS tools for that, like Prettier, TypeScript-ESLint and EditorConfig. There are point-and-click "programmers" who like to have their own skills hostage to Visual Studio and JetBrains, there are ultra nerds who will use Neovim on Arch btw and a tiling window manager, and there are young hipsters who use a browser disguised as a text editor. ![]() Sometimes, an IDE just fits someone better. Recently, the CTO decided to standardize, so everyone will use the same IDE. I think I am about to lose this battle.Ĭan someone give me some ideas how to convince them? - What makes VSCode better than WebStorm? (besides being free) If you switched from WS to VSCode, what were your reasons? I would like to convince my colleagues to choose VSCode but I don't have much mileage with WS, so I can't make a true comparison. The cost of WS is no factor since the company is ready to pay for any needed license. Their main reasons are "they like the UI", "it has better GIT tools" and "better refactoring tools". But it seems the majority of my colleagues are in favor of WS. I like VSCode mainly because it is fast and I'm accustomed to it from my personal projects at home. A poll in the near future will determine what IDE this would be. Until now, developers were free to use the IDE of their choice. Some web devs in my company are using WebStorm and some VSCode.
